The Grand Hotel Continental Siena – Starhotels Collezione, hosted our closing dinner for Connections Luxury in Italy.  Paola Caciolli, the hotel’s general manager, tells us what makes the venue so special

What is Grand Hotel Continental Siena’s unique selling point?
First of all, the atmosphere of a historic palace combined with modern comforts. The Grand Hotel Continental is housed in Palazzo Gori Pannilini, commissioned in the 17th century by the Pope Alexander VII as a wedding gift for his niece Olimpia.
Secondly, the hotel’s location in the historic and pedestrian area of the centre of Siena with all major attractions a short walking distance. And finally, it’s attentive, tailor-made service that creates memorable experiences for guests.

What kind of luxury experience does the resort offer?

Staying in the Panoramic Suite is certainly an unforgettable experience that only our hotel can offer – a beautiful two-storey room in the tower above the hotel building with the top living room offering a 360° view over the city of Siena, its landmarks such as the Duomo, the Torre del Mangia and San Domenico church and further out, to the surrounding countryside.
Guests can also stay in one of the memorable duplex suites and executive junior suites with high vaulted ceilings adorned with original 17th-century frescoes and décor. The Wine Cellar by Sapordivino, located at the bottom of the Medieval tower that dates back to 1200, showcases thousands of wine labels from 50 of the most prestigious Tuscany wine producers.

Tell us about where we had the closing dinner for Connections Luxury in Italy

We had a welcome aperitif in the magnificent Salone delle Feste, the frescoed ballroom on the first floor. Guests then moved to the inner courtyard, under the high crystal dome and in the Sala Gori, the frescoed rooms of our Sapordivino restaurant on the ground floor, where dinner was served.

What’s the best way to experience the region on a luxury budget?
Certainly through personalised, private tours. For example, a tour of the wine area in vintage Fiat 500 cars, or an afternoon enjoying the breathtaking landscapes from hot air balloons.

Any tips for first-timers in Siena?
Take time to walk through the side streets and discover the 17 fountains of the 17 contradas (districts).
